Heavenly Stem

Strength of HS.

In the modern Bazi system of analyzing strength of the HS, the season is always treated as the most important criteria. There are several methods employed by various masters/schools. It is one of the most fascinating subject in Bazi.

Month Commander.

The DM born in the month commander.
For Jia and Yi born in Yin and Mao month.
For Bing and Ding born in Si and Wu month.
For Geng and Xin born in Shen and You month.
For Ren and Gui born in Hai and Zi month.
This method only focus on the two most prosperous months. Other months are not considered.
This method places the highest importance to the month.

Seasonal Stregth.

Based on the season with a grading system.
Based on the month/season, there are 5 different strength categories:
Prosperous
Supportive
Rest
In Prison
Death

Spring

Yin Mao Month
Wood             Prosperous
Fire                 Supportive
Water             Rest
Metal             In Prison
Earth              Death

Summer

Si Wu Month
Fire                 Prosperous
Earth              Supportive
Wood             Rest
Water             In Prison
Metal             Death

Autumn

Shen You Month
Metal             Prosperous
Water             Supportive
Earth              Rest
Fire                 In Prison
Wood             Death

Winter

Hai Zi Month
Water             Prosperous
Wood             Supportive
Metal             Rest
Earth              In Prison
Fire                 Death

Earth Month

Earth              Prosperous
Metal             Supportive
Fire                 Rest
Wood             In Prison
Water             Death

Dominant Hidden Heavenly Stem.

Yin Tiger

Yin tiger palace Jia wood at the same time with Bing fire and Wu earth,
Lichun 4th February to 5th March, remember to use 3 Bing fire, remaining days Jia wood prosperous and in command,

Mao Rabbit

Mao rabbit palace Yi wood alone come across,
JingZhe 6th to 20th March, Yi wood not yet useful,
ChunFen Spring Equinox 21st March to 4th April, Yi wood is central,
6th to 20th March – 15 days – Jia Wood
21st March to 4th April – 15 days - Yi Wood

Chen Dragon

Chen dragon hides Yi wood, Wu earth with 3 parts Gui,
清明乙木十日管,后来八日癸水洋;
QingMing 5th to 19th April, Yi wood governs for the first 10 days, later 8 days rules by Gui water,
GuYu 20th April to 4th May, first 3 Wu earth flourish, within earth strength need detailed analysis.
This method treats the DHHS as the most important rather than all the HHS as carrying the same weight.

Master Shen’s method.

Master Shen in ZPZQ explained that the season is not the most important criteria. It is in fact the root which should be considered when analyzing the strength of the HS, not the season.
The other important factor is the location of the root. In ZPZQ’s method, the root can be in any of the pillar. There is no need to consider the distant of the root unlike the modern system.
It also relies heavily on the 12 Chang Sheng Qi phase method to determine the strength of the root.

12 Chang Sheng Qi phase strength:

Strong root:

Chang Sheng, Di Wang, Guan Dai, Lin Guan (also called Jianlu).

Strength based on the Earth EB.

The strength of the Tomb/Storehouse are also important consideration.
These are the four earth EB, Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei.
Chen being the water tomb, Xu being the fire tomb, Chou being the metal tomb and Wei being the wood tomb.
Inside the tomb EB, there are three Hidden Heavenly Stem, namely the Earth HHS, the Tomb HHS and the Left over Qi HHS.
For example inside Chen there is Wu, Yi and Gui. Gui being the tomb HHS, Yi being the left over Qi from Spring.

The reason the roots are considered the most important factors in Bazi analysis is the emphasis based on the 10 god protruded in the HS.
When the HS are being attacked, it is stated that with root it is able to withstand the onslaught. Without root it will be damaged easily.

Chapter 6:  The Strength of Heavenly Stems.

Discussing the 10 HS: obtaining the season but not prosperous and losing the season but not weak.

Classic: Obtaining the time/season is considered prosperous.
Out of time/season is considered weak.
Even though there is such a logic, it is a dead method.
Should use a dynamic method to observe.

If the HS are not in season, but the Year or Hour provides ‘Lu Shen’ or ‘Prosperous’ Qi phase, how can it be considered as weak?
Comment: Every Pillar can provide the strength to the HS, not just the month.

Autumn wood even though is considered weak, but with deep roots the wood is considered as strong.

Other rules for the support from other HS.
Obtaining one Bi Jian is not the as good as having one tomb/store in the EB.
Like Jia meeting Wei, Bing meeting Xu.
For Yi meeting Xu, Ding meeting Chou is not discussed in the same manner.
The reason being the there is no wood hidden inside Xu, no fire hidden inside Chou.

Obtaining two Bi Jian, is not as good as having one left over qi.
Like Yi meeting Chen, Ding meeting Wei.

Obtaining three Bi jian, is not as good as having one Chang Sheng, Lu or Prosperous Qi.
Like Jia meeting Hai, Zi, Yin, Mao.

Eating God - Detail analysis.

San Ming Tung Hui. Discussing Eating God.

Detail analysis.

Geng with Ren as the EG, with Chang Sheng Qi phase at Shen (for Ren), Shen Luck Period can be considered as fortunate. You which is the Muyu weak Qi phase for Ren, for Ren Water during You LP will not be ideal.
Comment: For Geng DM having Ren as the EG. With Shen which is the Chang Sheng Qi phase for Ren, it is considered fortunate. Fig EG-01
Having You which is the Muyu Qi phase for Ren, it is not the best. Fig EG-02
Showing the importance of Qi phase when analyzing the strength of HS.

Fig EG-01

Fig EG-02

Ren EG producing Jia wood being the Wealth of Geng (DM), self producing to distribute the Wealth. Not considered as the real wife (Wealth).
Comment: For Geng DM having Ren as the EG producing Jia wood which is the wealth for Geng. It means the Wealth is from EG which is created by the DM and not from the marriage to the wife.
Jia wood during You Luck Period is in prison and metal is at home. Ren water is considered a failure. How can the wood help to support the father (wealth)?
Comment: During You luck period, Jia (wealth) is weak and metal is strong. The Ren EG is in Muyu very weak Qi phase. With both weak EG and Wealth, it will not be helpful to the father (wealth).
The luck regarded as ordinary.
During Xu Luck Period, further with Ren Jia in the HS, considered as half auspicious half inauspicious.
Meeting Wu can have disaster, meeting Geng can be considered fortunate,
During Hai Luck Period can be most fortunate.
Comment: Hai luck period when Ren EG is in strong Qi phase.
During Zi Luck Period with Gui water as the HO, with heavy HO diminishing the Qi, further Geng is in Si (dead) Qi phase. Jia is in Muyu weak Qi phase at Zi. Regarded as the arrival of disaster and calamity.
During Chou luck period, the store of Geng metal, when water is prosperous. Further with Ji Chou helping Geng Jia. Which is in Guan Dai Qi phase. Regarded as being prosperous for 10 years.
During Yin luck period it is auspicious, during Mao luck period it is with disaster.
The rest analyze in a similar manner.

Feng Shui Classics

Feng Shui method based on the classics.

In carrying out university research paper, whenever we refer to a book, it is most important for us to identify the source. It is this training which makes it very important to quote the source where we get the information. When researching on Feng Shui methodology, I also feel it is important to search for the source where the method originates.

There are many schools of Feng Shui.
Which are the schools the Classics refers to?
Did the classics refer to any of the schools?
What are the Feng Shui classics?
Guo Pu
·       Zhang Zhu葬书
Huang Shi Gong黄石
·       Ching Nan Jing
ZengWenChan
·       Ching Nan Zhu
Yang Jun-Song (Song Dynasty)
·       Ching Nan Au Yu
·       Tian Yi Jing
·       Ye Che Jing
·       Bao Zhao Jing
It is interesting how the classics are very clearly separated into very clear topics.

Zhang Zhu:

For example, I would say Zhang Zhu concentrates on explaining the origin of Qi, the movement of Qi, how the Qi can affect humans, how to identify and differentiate  Qi in our environment.

Ching Nan Jing:

Most of the fundamental of Feng Shui is included here. For example, Hetu, Loushu, 5 elements, Bagua (Early Heaven and Late Heaven), 28 Constellations, etc.

Ching Nan Zhu:

The basic theory of Feng Shui is introduced in this book.
The theory of Yin Yang.
The theory of the 24 mountains. (San He method)
·       24 mountains both going together, few present day master understand the meaning.
The theory of mountain and water.
This is like an introduction book with no details.

Ching Nan Au Yu:

The fundamental theory.

Tian Yi Jing:

The application.

Ye Che Jing:

The analysis.

IMHO, the three books are all about San He theory.
Not saying other schools are not relevant. It is perhaps referred in other classics.
As explained by Howord Choy.
http://howardchoy.wordpress.com/2012/12/05/a-brief-history-of-xuan-kong-fei-xing-feng-shui/
Quote” The technique of the flying stars is well explained in the classics Xuan Kong Mi Zhi
玄空秘旨,Xuan Ji Fu , Fei Xing Fu 星赋 all published in the Song Dynasty 宋朝 (960-1279).”

Attached below a section of Zhang Zhu which refers to some of the most important Feng Shui methodologies to show how the classics are such treasures when studying Feng Shui.

Zhang Zhu

Riding golden dragon (mountain) in relation to the water, locating the Xue based on the topography and vegetation. (Or Xue methodology)
·       Comment: Riding the golden dragon represents the location.  Riding the golden dragon means the way the Qi flows through the higher ground to the lower ground. The dragon represents the contour.
·       In relation to the water mouth. (The intersection of rivers)
·       Analyzing the Xue based on the topography or the theory. In San He the Xue is always taken in relation to the location and the water mouth.
From the outside it is based on the Eight directions (Bagua), internally it is based on the 5 elements.
·       Comment: In San He Feng Shui, measuring the external Qi is based on the Tian Pan. (Heaven Plate) It is actually measuring the Qi phase. The strength of the Qi. Whether it is Sheng Qi or Si Qi or the different stages of the Qi phase.
·       Measuring the internal Qi is based on the Di Pan. (Earth Plate) The 5 elements refers to the Nayin 72 dragons.

The heavenly lights (Qi from above) coming down, the earth Qi going upwards.
·       Comment: Qi comes from above but also from the ground where it is tapped.
·       This is referring to two types of Qi. One from above and one from below. The Heaven and Earth Qi.
·       San Yuan LiQi method mostly is about Heaven’s Qi.
·       San He method is mostly about earth Qi.

Yin Yang clashing or at peace, five above but only four perfections.
·       Comment: The theory of Yin Yang, whether it is clashing or it is to be the same; This is one of the most important key to Feng Shui which is only for the students from the school.
·       Although five elements but there are only four formations. Again showing the validity of San He Feng Shui. The four formations; Metal, Wood, Water and Fire. No Earth formation.

Through observation and intelligence to seek the knowledge and the skill;
Avoiding what is not correct;
Observing the high and low;
Through analysis and wisdom;
Fully comprehend the meaning of yin and Yang;
Arriving at the skill to change the mandate from heaven.
·       Comment: Another reference to the importance of Yin Yang. The most fundamental theory of Feng Shui which is not taught and which is reference again and again in all the classics.
